Course Description: Provides opportunities to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in an integrated way. It also provides practice in how to greet and take leave of someone, to ask and respond to basic questions, to speak and read within a range of carefully selected topics and to create an understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures.
Curriculum Overview:

Unit I – All About Me LENGTH: 2 weeks ESSENTIAL QUESTION(S): Who am I? And what do I have in common with students in Latin American countries. Classroom commands, present tense, numbers, family vocabulary, adjectives, sports and extra-curricular activities. |
Unit 2 – Daily Life LENGTH: 3 weeks ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How do you live your daily life and how does it compare to the lives of students in Latin American countries? Daily routine, ordinal numbers, computer vocabulary, and comparisons. |
Unit 3 – Healthy Living LENGTH: 3 weeks ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: What does healthy living mean to you? How do your habits and ideas about healthy living differ from students in Latin America? Food pyramid, vocabulary for expressions for illness and health, body parts, and making an appointment. |
Unit 4 – Youth LENGTH: 3 weeks ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: How have experiences and events contributed to your identity? How do your experiences differ from those of students in Latin American countries? School subjects, preferences, childhood activities, recurring past activities and major life events. |
Unit 5 – Travel and Places LENGTH: 3 weeks ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: How do different communities affect your behavior? Why do people travel? Nationalities, geography, prepositions, travel vocabulary, modes of transportation and 24-hour clock. |

GRADING SYSTEM: The DeKalb County School District believes that the most important assessment of student learning shall be conducted by the teachers as they observe and evaluate students in the context of ongoing classroom instruction. A variety of approaches, methodologies, and resources shall be used to deliver educational services and to maximize each student’s opportunity to succeed. Teachers shall evaluate student progress, report grades that represent the student’s academic achievement, and communicate official academic progress to students and parents in a timely manner through the electronic grading portal. See Board Policy IHA.

Notes:
*English Learners (ELs) must not receive numerical or letter grades for the core content areas in elementary and middle school during their first year of language development. A grade of CS or CU must be assigned. This rule may be extended beyond the first year with approval from the EL Studies Program. English Learners must receive a grade for ESOL courses.
~Elementary schools will utilize P (pass) and F (fail) in Health/Physical Education, Music, World Languages, Visual Arts and Performing Arts.
DISTRICT EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS |
STUDENT PROGRESS | Semester progress reports shall be issued four and a half, nine and thirteen and a half weeks into each semester. The progress of students shall be evaluated frequently and plans shall be generated to remediate deficiencies as they are discovered. Plans shall include appropriate interventions designed to meet the needs of the students. See Board Policy IH. |
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY | Students will not engage in an act of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, cheating, providing false information, falsifying school records, forging signatures, or using an unauthorized computer user ID or password. See the Code of Student Conduct - Student Rights and Responsibilities and Character Development Handbook. |
HOMEWORK | Homework assignments should be meaningful and should be an application or adaptation of a classroom experience. Homework is at all times an extension of the teaching/learning experience. It should be considered the possession of the student and should be collected, evaluated and returned to the students. See Board Policy IHB. |
MAKE-UP WORK DUE TO ABSENCES | When a student is absent because of a legal reason as defined by Georgia law or when the absence is apparently beyond the control of the student, the student shall be given an opportunity to earn grade(s) for those days absent. Make-up work must be completed within the designated time allotted (within 1 week upon returning to class). After 1 week and work is not made up, student shall receive a zero. See Board Policy IHEA. By way of recovery, students must complete or make-up all missing assignments for the 1st 9 weeks of the semester by Thursday, October 29, 2020 and for the last 9 weeks, all make-up or missing assignments must be completed by Thursday, December 17, 2020. No exceptions! |

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS | Classroom Expectations: A. Succeed in Spanish Class 1. Attend class daily and be on time. 2. Take class notes daily. 3. Memorize class notes and sponges outside of class a minimum of thirty (30) minutes daily. 4. Participate (speak Spanish) daily. 5. Complete and turn in all assignments on time via Verge 6. Attend virtual tutorials with Mr. Ryan 7. Always communicate your academic concerns or issues with Mr. Ryan 8. Show your face during online class sessions 9. Earn class points daily for attendance and participation B. Follow the Classroom Rules 1. Come prepared for class with required materials. 2. Raise your virtual hand for permission to speak or to leave your seat. 3. Respect your teacher and everyone during each virtual presentation. 4. No cameras during virtual class. 5. Practice good virtual class etiquette. 6. Do your best and have fun. 7. Stay awake, alert, listen attentively and maximize your time in the virtual classroom at all times. 8. Leave all negative energy and behavior out of the virtual classroom. 9. No profanity is allowed during class instructional time. 10.
